Cross Training - Mount Monadnock

It's been a really relaxing summer for Run Rhody. Outside of a couple fun runs, we've really been taking it easy. Ryan's gearing up for a couple half marathons in the fall, and I'm going to do a bunch of 5ks, something I really missed this spring when we were training for Providence and Boston.
While we've been taking a break from running, we've been doing a lot of other stuff we don't really have time for when we're training.

This weekend we climbed Mount Monadnock in Jaffrey, NH.

About 2.5hours from Providence, this was a great day trip and an awesome cross training activity. Really used a lot of the same muscles as running, and really engaged our cores, something that we could always use improvement on.

We went with our friends from the Tar Heel Hiker --and I highly encourage you to follow that blog when you get a chance. She does a lot of New England hikes that are easy to get to from Rhode Island.

The uneven terrain really engages your core.

And, if you're lucky, maybe you can nap at the top.

Run Around The Block

Got an email about this one, to be held Saturday, September 12th. I have a couple friends who have run it and loved it too. Here's a link for more info, although it looks like the registration form isn't yet up.

And here's the email review on it:
I presume this race is still held: The "Run around the Block" race on Block Island, which as I recall is about 9.5 miles of ultra-scenic running up small sharp hills, then down the backside of same hill, then up another, then down, etc. Challenging with the small hills, but again, drop-dead gorgeous scenery, fresh salty ocean air and it really is a whole-day event beginning with the ferry ride out there (with gaggles of other runners on the same boat), the race itself, barbeque afterwards poolside at a club there, a nice refreshing dip in the pool nearly soon as you cross the finish line, then the ferry ride back to mainland...with all the same runers, a bar on the boat, a great time in every regard, a complete running experience/the total Lil' Rhody running experience-it doesn't get any more classically "Rhode Island" than this. Date: late August or early September. Have fun!

Save The Date - Charlie Stavros Memorial On the Beach Run

We ran this race last year and had a fantastic time.

Monday, August 24th - 6:00pm - Meet at Pleasant View Inn

The end of the summer Westerly Track & Athletic Club season, the race is more like a party. A 3-mile out and back entirely on the sand, people are just out having a good time, many of them not wearing shoes and timing is done by 3"x5" cards that you can turn in at the end.

While the race is only 3 miles, we found it to be pretty challenging because of the sand and were so happy that we were rewarded with refreshments (and beverages) afterwards. The views are great, the mood is great, and it was a wonderful way to enjoy one of the last days of summer.

I highly recommend if you're able to go.

Bluff Point Friday Night Fun Runs

This is an easy trip for those of you in southern Rhode Island.

Every Friday from now through August 21st, Groton Parks & Recreation runs fun runs in Groton, CT at Bluff Point State Park.

There's a kids run at 6:00pm, immediately followed by a 3.5 mile loop for adults at about 6:07. The crowd was fun and receptive to new people when we tried it out for the first time this Friday.

For those who prefer a shorter run, you can also make the run an out-and-back at any point without judgment or penalty.

First-timers can show up any week and sign a waiver/registration form. There's no fee. The timing is a person with a sportswatch, with a split time at roughly the 1.4 mile mark. You keep track of your own times week to week.

This was a blast, we loved it. Afterwards, some of the other participants had coolers and snacks, we're definitely doing that next time.

16th Annual Nick Bottone Track Mile

This is in the race calendar, but Carolyn Thorton's blog on Projo has all of the info as well:

Red Rooster Ramble

I have been wanting to get to one of these all summer by my work schedule makes it difficult if not impossible to get to Warren by 6:30.

Still though, wanted to share the details of the Rhode Island Road Runners weekly Red Rooster Ramble 5 mile series, because I've heard nothing but awesome things about it.

Enjoy!

Grog & Dog Jog Race Report

We didn't get to run this, but a Run Rhody reader named Doug did --- here's what he had to say about the race!

This race definitely is a lot of fun. The 1.25 loop is flat and fast, just make sure you walk the course first if you haven’t run it before as people have gone the wrong way in the past.

One of the great things about this race is you can see the runners over half the time by standing across the street from The Wild Colonial, and watching them on the other side of the river. This also helps your next runner get an idea of how long before they need to run.

Eating the hotdog and drinking the beer after sprinting is definitely the challenging part of this course. The “eating area” is well marked, as well as the beer keg path leading up to the eating area and plenty of helpers are there recording times and releasing the next wave of runners.

This was the 4th running of this race (1 time in 07, twice in 08) and the 3rd running for my team (we missed the first year) and I recognized many of the participants from last year. There were close to 40 teams (a record) but we still managed to three-peat in the Coed Sub-Master Class with a new team record (39 minutes flat).

The skill levels range from a few Elite teams (the Wild Colonial team is anchored by Keith Kelly from the Irish National team) down to average skilled runners out for a fun run. No matter your level or finish time everyone enjoys this race.

They'll be running the race again on October 11th.

Doug also sent a link to the photos!

Thank you, Doug!!

Niantic Bay 10k Race Report

This weekend we ran the Niantic Bay 10k, which is in its 11th year and runs along some beautiful coastal roads in Niantic, CT. It benefits the Alliance for Living in New London, CT.

I had run it last year, but this was Ryan's first time doing the race.

First off, I do have to say that SNERRO race management runs some of the best races in the RI/CT area and this was no different. They are so upbeat, positive and clearly love the sport and it's just a pleasure to be around them. Things run on time, efficiently and with a smile.

The Niantic Bay 10k course is an out and back that's pretty flat with a couple of small uphills at the end. It starts at McCook's Beach in Niantic and runs out to the end of Old Black Point and back. The views are beautiful (lots of marsh views) and the water stops have been manned the last couple years by some great volunteers from the high school's LEO club. The Lions Club members staff the intersections and did a great job.

I have two tiny complaints about this year's race.

First of all, the course was SO quiet. Very few spectators, almost zero banter back and forth between runners, and no one cheering each other on. Since it was an out and back, the leaders passed those of us further back in the pack. NO ONE clapped (except me) for them! We're here to support each other, people!

This was also another race where they really did a good job hiding the post race water in an obscure and far away location. Okay - so maybe it wasn't "obscure and far away" but it wasn't very convenient. You had to go by all the food (including clam chowder and pizza) to find it.

All in all, it's an awesome way to end your work week/start your weekend. I love Friday night runs and this is one of the best ones we do all year.

This Week

Ryan got in a nice 4 miler today with some good hills. I was running a 1 mile loop and got two in before some stomach issues sent me running to the car. (TMI?)

This weekend we're going to run the Niantic Bay 10k on Friday night. Great run, highly recommend it if you can get over there in time. Starts at 6pm. Extremely relaxed out and back with shoreline views almost the whole time.

We are also really wanting to do the Grog & Dog Jog on Sunday in Providence but can't get a 4th team member. (Come on, who DOESN'T want to chug a beer and eat a hot dog!) So, as we start begging our friends for the next few days, if any readers out there want to join us, we'd be very happy to have you! Assuming there's still room for entrants. When I emailed last week the guy said it was filling up fast. (Hoping he was fibbing.)

3ish Miles in Mystic

For all you Rhody runners that live close to the CT border, I highly recommend checking out Mystic for a run. If you go on the weekend, this would make a really nice run/breakfast or run/lunch day. If you don't live near the CT border, this is an awesome little staycation trip, or still worth it for the day. To check out other things to do in the area, try out MysticCountry.com.

Anyway- this is actually a great route on my way home from work, but I haven't done it in a couple years and I was psyched to have an afternoon to run it again yesterday.

Park either behind the Mystic Packer Building at 27 Roosevelt Avenue (which is actually route 1- the building is prettymuch at the intersection of route 27 and route 1) or park at the Mystic Depot Train Station and Information Center, just next door. You'll head down route 27 toward Mystic Seaport, pass the Seaport and then turn around in the big cemetery. I fudged it a bit on the map, but you'll know where you are.

You run some past some beautiful houses, the whole length of Mystic Seaport, and get some nice views of the Mystic River as you pass Kitchen Little restaurant. If you're lucky, you'll also smell some yummy hot dogs from a summer food stand right around there too.

On the way back, it's nice to hug the Mystic River and take some of the side roads. Right now you'll find Mystic Seaport's Charles W. Morgan (huge wooden ship) out on the dry dock getting repaired-- awesome sight to see, and some more beautiful views of the river. You can see downtown Mystic and the drawbridge from this vantage point as well as you head back toward route 1. There's really no way to get lost, but your mileage will change depending on which side roads you jut in and out of.

Of course, a straightforward out and back is still pretty nice as well.

All of the roads have adequate sidewalks, and there's only one intersection that's just the slightest bit tricky. (And really, just the slightest.)

Running in the Rain

If you didn't notice, yesterday it poured!!

Ryan is doing his runs internationally right now (okay, I doubt he's taking time to run during his travels) so our friend from JogNewLondon.com and I set up a much-loved Friday afternoon running date.

The good news is that these running dates have traditionally been followed by pizza, and the pizza last night did NOT disappoint. But to earn it, we trudged 5 miles in prettymuch constant downpour conditions.

We resisted the urge to overdress and headed out in shorts and t-shirts. After the initial sting of the first two minutes, it was great! Hardly even noticed the rain most of the time. DEFINITELY noticed the puddles. I suppose jumping over them and dodging around them counts as cross training!

We did the run in New London, CT. If you want to check out the area and some great routes there, head over to JogNewLondon.com.

Happy runs this weekend! We want to hear from any of you who are running some of the many great Rhody 5ks this weekend like South County Nursing & Rehab, Rhody 5k in Lincoln etc.

Race Report: Boston's Run to Remember

We weren't quite sure what to expect out of this half marathon outside of a recommendation from someone who ran the Run The Reservoir 15k, and a couple of mass emails from the race organizers to registrants leading up to the race. Honestly, we signed up without looking too much at the website, and decided to run it on a whim because we felt so good after the Willow Tree Half Marathon.

There were 4,039 finishers in the half marathon, plus a field of runners in a 5 mile race.

The course went from the Seaport in South Boston up to about Harvard and back. MUCH of the course was an out and back on Memorial Drive, and given a bit cooler temperatures and less humidity, this might have been really nice, because the view of the Charles River was phenomenal. Unfortunately, we both came away from the race just remembering how HOT we were on this (long) section of the course. The entire field of about 4,000 runners also had to turn around at a cone in the road at about mile 6 or 7, which was the "out" of the out and back. This was slightly annoying because with that many people it was definitely a pace interrupter.

There were several water stops along the route about every 3 miles which we felt were totally adequate as far as where they were located. They could have been organized a bit better --- often we had to go to the table and search for a cup of water or Gatorade. Additionally, there didn't seem to be any garbage cans at the water stop. I understand that many people don't use them, but some do- and it really would have helped because there was a lot of debris to run through.

Here's a personal pet peeve that we had --- runners, if you're going to use Gu and you're NOT at a water stop, please, PLEASE hold on to it, stick it in your pocket (or wherever you just took it out of), but please DON'T throw it on the ground. The race volunteers will pick up the debris that's left on the ground at the water stop, but they're not out on all 13.1 miles of the course to pick up your Gu wrappers. We were just feet from the Charles River and there was, what we felt to be a LOT of litter on the course. As runners, we enjoy nature, the environment, a clean earth, whatever you want to call it - so we really should not be the ones to ruin it. Please.

Back to the rest of the race --- Great views of Boston Gardens on the way back, nice section of Comm Ave, and a quick trip through Downtown Crossing and the Financial District back to the finish.
Mixed reviews on the finish. For the last half mile (at least) you could see and hear the finish line. The last half mile (again, at least) also included a pretty arched bridge, zero shade, and a bunch of silent spectators (seriously, no clapping. at least at the post 2 hour mark). I didn't mind the finish at all. Loved watching the finish line get closer and closer, which got me up the hill on the bridge and helped me power through the heat. Ryan and our friend from Jog New London really disliked the finish.

Post race there was plenty of food and water, although it was a bit crowded and chaotic. I'm not sure how you avoid that when you're in a city as opposed to a more open park atmosphere and you have over 4,000 people looking for a cool drink.

Other notes - plenty of parking. Lots of porto-potties at the start/finish and EXCELLENT use of pace markers at the start. Really helped avoid a slow first mile filled with people darting in and out.

Put about a half a dozen new races up on the Rhode Island Race Calendar. We plan to run the 5k in Newport this weekend -- looking forward to it! Has anyone else run it before?

Willow Tree Half Marathon Race Report

There were a few things about this race that were awesome and a few things about this race that I'd love to see change if we do it again next year.

The course was not very scenic, hard for spectators to get out to, and heavy on the potholes while we were on the road, but great as a run. All of the hills were in the first half with an easy, flat second half. There were some pretty cool spectators who DID get out on the course, including the coolest little girl playing the harmonica at mile 2 and two awesome kids playing Beastie Boys around mile 4. Also, the Team in Training signs all through India Point Park were a really nice boost for ALL of us. (But good for you, Team in Training, because you totally made me want to join up for one of these races.)

Organization was not a strong point of this race. From the get-go, the website was hard to navigate, slow, and not really full of information. When the maps finally did go up, they were confusing. There were some water stops at the beginning of the course that were not where they should have been, according to the map, so I just stopped expecting them after that and I don't know if the other ones were in the correct locations or not.

The start and finish were pretty convenient downtown. I see where they were going by putting the water kind of far away, a little inconvenient, but definitely limited the crowding that sometimes happens right after the finish.

We had a great run. The weather was perfect. Ryan broke his previous best time, I was a couple minutes slower, but I'll take it because I felt much better, had some kick and the end and didn't feel like a zombie after. Ran with our friend from JogNewLondon.com who did really well too!

Not sure we'll do this one next year, but definitely enjoyed the day. Looking forward to ditching the long runs for a while and getting in some fun 5ks before it gets hot this summer!

Willow Tree Half Marathon

The blog posts are going to continue to stay a little spotty until we finish up with this half marathon May 3rd. Then we'll get back out to exploring some new routes and running a bunch of shorter races.

In the meantime, stick with the race calendar, it's become pretty comprehensive! And if your race isn't up there, email us and let us know!

Owwwwwww!

First running-related fall yesterday. (Only took me 5 years, not bad.) Mile 4 of an 8-mile out and back. I was JUST about to turn around!

SO much sand on the sidewalks and so I didn't see a little lip between two of the concrete slabs. BAM- down on both knees and both hands.

Ryan and I were out there together, which was good, it wasn't getting dark, wasn't cold or raining, all good. But I did have to run home 4 miles with bloody legs and hands, I ripped my favorite pair of capris and yes, it really hurt. (still does.)

Outside of that, it was a good run and we'll post the route later tonight or tomorrow!

New Races Up

Our training has been pretty interrupted by life lately, but we're hoping to get back out tomorrow.

In the meantime, a some more races up on the Race Calendar. Next year, no spring half marathon so we can spend our weekends doing all these fun 5ks instead of long runs!

Bad Run this Weekend

Had a horrible run on Saturday. Meant to log 10 miles, ended up with waaaaaaaaaay less. Did an out and back starting into the wind and just was NOT feeling it. We're planning on a couple 4-5milers this week and then another 10 (for real this time) on Saturday.

Run the Reservoir 15k Race Report

This was a great run! I loved it and so did my friend from JogNewLondon.com.

The race took place this past Saturday, March 18th in Scituate. The course started and finished on Danielson Pike, with some sections on wooded trails and route 116.

At about mile 4 we crossed a causeway straight through the middle of the reservoir. Felt like about 3/4 of a mile with BEAUTIFUL views on either side. I felt like I was in upstate NY, Vermont or New Hampshire. The lake was so flat that the reflection of the wooded hills and blue sky looked just as good as the actual wooded hills and blue sky.

Two hills, the second one worse than the first, but the rest was pretty flat. Both hills were over by mile 5.

The worst part of MY run happened at some point during mile 5 when the man in front of me blew snot out of his nose (no big deal, we all do it) but he didn't move over to the side, wasn't aware of me behind him, and his snot landed RIGHT ON MY FACE. Nose and lips. Disgusting. I passed him and thought about saying something but decided I'd just make a point to stay in front of him for the rest of the run.

Everyone there was super nice, and I won a raffle prize. Can't beat it.

4 Miler Tonight in Niantic

Loved the O'Niantic course so much and really enjoy the Niantic Bay Boardwalk, so I combined the two for this four miler. It's about 50 degrees right now and there should be a little breeze coming in off the water, but I don't anticipate it getting too cold:

Race Report: O'Niantic 5k

We had a blast at this race. Not only were the costumes fun and outrageous, the course was flat and FAST. In fact, we both now have new PRs!

Here are a few photos.

Next race is probably the Run the Reservoir 15k in Scituate on March 28th.

Race Report: Train to End Stroke 5k

We LOVED this run!

Started at 6:00pm at the Harp & Hound in Mystic, CT and by our GPS was just under a 5k along the Mystic River. Beautiful scenery, great weather, fun people - no bibs, no t-shirts, just a great time. TONS of raffle prizes and great food afterwards. Also plenty of Guinness on tap, which we took advantage of. (left)

The run takes you up Pearl Street in Mystic and along the Mystic River to just past where the river runs under I-95. You're looking at some great coastline scenery, beautiful historic homes, boat launches, and a view of Mystic Seaport from across the river.
It seemed as though this run used to be in February, but with nearly 60 degree weather and daylight at the start, I can't imagine running this a month earlier.

Stay tuned, we will definitely be running this one next year.

If you live close to southeastern Connecticut, check out JogNewLondon.com -- our friends from the site joined us for this race (right). That site has great running routes for the area, and a complete race calendar for most of Connecticut and Rhode Island along with a slew of running resources.
Course map is below.

6 Miles at Roger Williams Park

Despite what you might think about Roger Williams Park, it's full of hills. None of the hills on this route were particularly long or steep, but there were a bunch of them.

Today, all of the streets were free of snow, and a lot of the sidewalks were fine too. You really can run right in the road, except in a couple of high-traffic areas. Or, areas that are highly trafficked with geese --- they are NOT afraid of you, so you're better off if you run around them instead of assuming they'll get out of your way. (Learned that lesson today.)

We found it best to park at the carousel where there's plenty of parking and open restrooms and start the route from there, but you can really park wherever you want and do the loop.
You also might want to drive the route to orient yourself before running it as there aren't a lot of street signs to be found.
The route offers plenty of scenery, lots of statues (you can read about some of them and the park's history here), gardens, waterfowl and horses.

Great Run, Close to Rhode Island

Celebrate the extended daylight on Sunday, March 8th at the Train to End Stroke Mystic Moon River Run / Walk.

The race starts at 6:00pm from the Harp & Hound Tavern on Pearl Street in Mystic and ends there as well. The tavern is located in downtown Mystic and is a great little authentic Irish pub, one of our favorites.

It's a 5k, $20 donation to benefit the American Stroke Association.

More details and the registration form here.

We're Registered!

We're all set for the Willow Tree Half Marathon in Providence on Sunday, May 3rd as part of Cox Rhode Races.

Here's the link for more info and to register.

Has anyone run this race before? Got any feedback on the course? Anyone planning to run it this year?

We've been doing our long runs on Saturdays or Sundays, so as we continue to plan those, we'll post them here to see if anyone's interested in joining us!

Snow, Slush and Yuck!

On the way to work this morning I saw a hard-core runner out on the snowy shoulders of the road. The weather obviously does NOT bother him.

At first I felt pretty wimpy, if this guy can do it, why don't I?

Then turning a corner, I skidded in a pile of slush, and while it wasn't anything major, I did swerve quite a bit on the road and realized that the skid could just have easily ended up pushing my car right into the runner.

I hate running in the snow. I hate the slippery feeling under my feet, the constant feeling that cars won't see me, won't give me enough room or will hit me.

Anyone know of some indoor running spots in Rhode Island? Indoor tracks? Something other than a treadmill?

6ish Miles in Providence

Sunday we tried out a variation of a Providence route that we found on MapMyRun.com. We started at India Point Park, where there's a public lot. The parking lot is across the street from the Radisson Providence at 220 India Ave.

The park is nice, some pathways around the perimeter, and Brown's boathouse is located there too. I have a feeling if it wasn't winter, things would have been a lot more active there.

The first mile of this route was a little "eh" on the scenery. You run under some new highway construction and Gano Street had a bunch of vacant buildings, building with graffiti etc. Add to that the fact that you're going up hill for the first mile too.

But the rest was very nice. You can choose any road on the map as a cut-over to Blackstone Boulevard, and by then, you're going past some beautiful homes. Blackstone is a divided road with a gravel sometimes asphalt path down the middle. Plenty of trees, other runners, people walking their dogs. It was a chilly and somewhat dreary day and there were still lots of other people out being active.

The last mile is quick, all downhill.

Today's 2 Miler

Today we did a very boring out and back 2 miler on Route 117.

Largely, the sidewalks are covered in about three inches of sand/packed ice. The shoulders of the road are wide enough so that when there's no oncoming traffic you can get out past the sand, but we were out during morning drive time, so I guess we got a bit of a beach run-style workout too.

Hopefully the roads are cleaned up at the first sign of spring!

Coventry Bike Path to Walker Farm Route - 3.5 Miles

This is one of our great standby routes. The scenery is varied and the hill about halfway through provides a good challenge. Route 117 is not too exciting but there are sidewalks and wide shoulders on either side of the road.

Start at the parking lot for the Coventry Greenway (bike path) on Route 117. (It's the same parking lot as Father & Sons restaurant... formerly Perks, or Dave's Perks.) Head to the back and hop on the bike path. Head out to the right.

Stay on the bike path until you hit the town's recycling center/animal control/bus parking, and take a right into the driveway to pass by all of the above plus the town hall and library. Continue onto Route 117 and head left for a short while before turning right onto Walker Lane.

Head up Walker Lane to the top of the hill. At the stop sign, turn right. Follow to the next left and loop around Cobblestone Terrace. (You'll get back to the stop sign at the intersection with Walker Lane.)

Stay on Cobblestone Terrace until its end at Leuba Road. Take a right onto Leuba and follow to its end at Route 117. Take a left onto Route 117 and follow back to the Greenway parking lot.

Welcome to Run Rhody!

We're two runners who moved to Rhode Island just over two years ago and have spent the last two years largely running out and backs, neighborhood routes and the bike trail by our house. This got to be pretty boring this fall when we completed our first half marathon.

While we know that there are probably plenty of great runs out there, we haven't found them yet.

So we decided to start this site as a place to discover some new routes, new races, and most of all, new people to run or hang out with. We hope this is a site where people can meet other runners, plan group runs, and share their favorite routes and favorite races with other Rhode Islanders.

Hope you'll join us!

About Us

We're two transplants to Rhode Island who are sick of running the same three out-and-backs from our house or driving 40 minutes to our nearest favorite runs.

Stick with us while we explore the Ocean State by foot, and send us some of your favorite runs and races!
